Darkon light and design

Somerville Library

The Somerville Library project transformed the existing learning environment at Somerville House, replacing an interior void with two new mezzanine levels and increasing the floor area by 537 square metres. The expanded library provides a range of flexible spaces designed to support collaboration, study and connection, with a considered lighting scheme complementing the architecture and varied learning environments.

LAD supplied a considered lighting solution for the Seymour Library at Somerville House, supporting the refurbishment and expansion of the existing learning environment.

Challenges

The lighting needed to respond to a variety of learning, study and collaborative spaces while maintaining a cohesive design language throughout the library. With the introduction of two new mezzanine levels, the scheme also needed to work across different ceiling heights and spatial configurations.

It was important that the selected fittings complemented the architectural features and materials while providing comfortable and effective illumination for the different ways the space would be used.

Lighting Solution

LAD supplied Darkon C Suspended linear extrusion lights with customised geometry, designed to respond to the unique requirements of the space.

The lighting scheme uses a layered illumination approach, combining suspended linear fittings with integrated general lighting to create a balanced and contemporary environment. The customised Darkon fittings provide both functional and architectural illumination, helping to define collaborative study hubs while introducing distinctive geometric forms into the interior.

This layered approach allows different areas of the library to be illuminated appropriately for study, collaboration and movement, while maintaining a consistent visual language throughout the space.

Darkon C Suspended Custom Shapes

The Darkon C Suspended system was customised to create distinctive geometric forms within the library's collaborative study hubs. The bespoke suspended linear extrusions provide effective illumination while acting as an architectural element within the space.

The customised geometry adds visual interest and helps define the different areas of the library, creating a lighting solution that is both functional and responsive to the architecture.

Performance & Compliance

The completed lighting installation supports the transformation of Somerville Library into a flexible and contemporary learning environment.

By combining customised suspended feature lighting with recessed and surface-mounted solutions, the scheme responds to the library's expanded footprint while enhancing the architectural character of the space. The layered approach provides comfortable illumination for study and collaboration, contributing to a cohesive, modern and engaging environment for students and staff.
