Nudgee Recreation Reserve District Sports Park
Nudgee Recreation Reserve District Sports Park was developed by Brisbane City Council to deliver much-needed sporting and recreational facilities for Brisbane's growing northern suburbs. The project provides a multi-purpose community destination featuring sporting fields, field lighting, pathways, a BMX track, a dog off-leash area, and improved connections to Nudgee Train Station.
LAD supplied a comprehensive sports lighting solution designed to support multiple sporting codes.
While delivering exceptional visual performance, minimising environmental impact, and meeting the stringent lighting requirements associated with the site's proximity to Brisbane Airport.
Challenges
The lighting design needed to accommodate a diverse range of sporting activities across four multi-purpose fields, each with different lighting requirements and performance standards. At the same time, the project required careful control of glare, overspill light, and upward light spill to protect surrounding ecological areas, nearby residential properties, and comply with dark sky principles. Its location approximately 12.8 kilometres from Brisbane Airport also introduced additional lighting constraints that required careful planning and precision.
Lighting Solution
LAD supplied a tailored sports lighting solution using the ewo R System, featuring a combination of R4 GEN3 and R2 GEN3 luminaires with multiple optical distributions and DALI control. The lighting design was developed to meet the highest sporting requirements before being refined for each individual field, ensuring compliance across multiple sporting codes while maintaining excellent uniformity, glare control, and operational flexibility.
The selected luminaires utilise flat glass construction and specialised left- and right-throw optics to reduce upward waste light, improve near-pole performance, and precisely direct illumination where it is needed most.

Featuring flat glass construction and specialised optical distributions, the system delivers highly efficient sports lighting while reducing overspill into surrounding residential and ecological areas. Combined with DALI control, the solution provides the flexibility required for a multi-sport facility operating across a range of competition levels.
Performance & Compliance
The completed lighting installation delivers safe, high-quality illumination across the reserve while satisfying a comprehensive range of Australian Standards, sporting body guidelines, broadcast requirements, and obtrusive lighting controls. Post-installation auditing confirmed the lighting performance achieved the project objectives without requiring further adjustments, providing Brisbane City Council with a reliable and future-ready sports lighting solution.
